Confidence is not the absence of nerves. It can grow when a young person knows they have a plan, has practiced, and has people they trust when the outcome is uncertain.

Set one realistic goal and break it into manageable steps. Encourage the athlete to notice what they can control: preparation, effort, communication, and how they respond. After a practice or challenge, ask what they learned and what they would like to try next.

Parents and coaches can support confidence by giving specific encouragement and honest feedback without reducing the young person to a result. When stress becomes overwhelming, seek support from a qualified professional.
