The Family Game Plan: Preparing for the Next Level Together

Every athlete needs a game plan. Every family needs one, too.

The journey toward college sports can bring exciting opportunities—and plenty of questions. Families often hear about highlights, camps, rankings, and recruiting, but the foundation begins with something bigger: preparing the whole person for success in school, sports, and life.

At Our Vision Sports Education Foundation, a nonprofit 501(c)(3), we believe families deserve clear information, honest conversations, and a plan they can build together. Our message is simple: Repair. Rebuild. Succeed.

Start with the person

Before asking where an athlete might play, ask who they are becoming. How are they handling challenges? Are they learning to communicate, manage their time, and take responsibility? Athletic goals matter, and so do confidence, character, health, relationships, and a vision for life beyond the game.

Build an academic game plan

A family game plan includes regular conversations about school. Review grades, course choices, study habits, and the athlete’s goals with their school counselor. College admission and eligibility requirements can vary, so confirm the current requirements with the relevant schools and eligibility organizations rather than relying on assumptions.

Learn the recruiting process

Recruiting is easier to navigate when families understand what questions to ask. What schools fit the athlete academically and personally? What does a coach need to see? What are the next steps, and who is responsible for them? Keep notes, ask for clarity, and remember that an invitation or evaluation is not a guarantee of a roster spot or scholarship.

Make wellness part of the plan

Performance and well-being belong in the same conversation. Make room for rest, appropriate training, nutrition, and support when an athlete is dealing with stress or injury. Families should work with qualified health professionals when individual care is needed.

Parents need support, too

Parents and guardians are part of the team. You don’t have to know every answer today. Start by talking together about the athlete’s goals, the family’s questions, and one practical step you can take this week. As your athlete grows, revisit the plan and adjust it together.
